Connecting Generosity with Community Needs

Every facet of this community from the schools, day cares, to community organizations, parks and our local government improvements have been positively impacted through financial support provided by The Shelby Foundation. The Foundation understands this community; knows where there is the greatest need, and where we can have the greatest impact.

No one should ever go hungry, and if the Foundation has anything to say about it, they won’t. The Shelby Foundation has given grants to the First Lutheran Food Bank, FISH of Shelby, & Shelby Christian Outreach to provide food to those in need.
Therapeutic horseback riding uses the process of learning to ride and the movements of the horse to strengthen primary body control and sequencing, but it is an expensive luxury that many are not afforded. Children with disabilities who attend Auburn Elementary were given the opportunity to participate in therapeutic horseback riding programs thanks to the financial assistance of The Shelby Foundation.

The Women’s Fund of The Shelby Foundation was established in 2009 to empower women by providing funding for area programs promoting intellectual, physical, emotional, social, economic, and cultural growth for area women. Taking a proactive stance, the Women’s Fund Advisory Committee instituted a lecture series, Let’s Talk: Woman to Woman, which brings education and camaraderie to women who live in and around our community.

There are over 20 scholarship funds housed at The Shelby Foundation benefitting graduating seniors and, on average, approximately $70,000 is awarded each year to worthy applicants. Scholarship recipients are determined by selection committees generally comprised of fund representatives and educators.

Education is another area where the Foundation has decided to make a difference. The Shelby Foundation is a large financial supporter of both private and public institutions in Shelby City School District. Thousands of dollars are awarded yearly to financially aid with academic programs, class trips, materials, and more.

Shelby Safety Town, a longstanding institution for 4-5 year-olds, is a week-long program that gives children the tools they will need to be safe in a frequently unsafe world. While pedestrian and traffic safety are emphasized, lessons on dangers in everyday situations and citizenship are also taught.

The Shelby Foundation made summer more exciting for kids in the community by partnering with Seltzer Pool to sponsor Family Fun Nights. Over the course of three free events last summer, area children and their families gathered together to enjoy the pool, games, snow cones, and prizes.
